What are proximity cards?

Proximity cards, also called prox cards or access control cards, are a type of technology credential used with access control systems. They look like a standard plastic card-- just like any employee ID or membership card--but have an internal copper circuit and antenna that sends a signal that can be read by a proximity reader. When used as part of an access control system, prox cards can be used as digital keys to unlock doors, and are an effective way to control access to buildings or rooms within buildings. Prox cards use a 125 kHZ frequency, and are usually formatted as 26 bit cards, but multiple formats are available. The type of card you need depends on the type of proximity reader being used.

HID cards are the most popular brand of proximity cards, but other compatible brands are available, usually at a lower cost with faster turnaround time.
